Dolores, Spain – Sheppards Rest

Page

Our visit to Sheppards Rest was the result of a recommendation from some travellers we met in Italy last year. It’s a small campsite, akin to a CL site in the UK and has about half a dozen pitches. We were allocated a place which had previously housed a large mobile home so we have plenty of space for our outfit.

The site is owned by Jill Sheppard, originally from the UK and our pitch was fully serviced with water, drainage and electricity to hand. The electricity although metered was perfectly reasonable. Facilities include two toilets and two showers which were always very clean and more than adequate for a site of this size. There are also a couple of washing machines with honesty boxes requesting 2 Euros per wash. Very reasonable.

We enjoyed being in this rural part of Spain. The town of Dolores still has the feeling of a traditional Spanish town untouched by major tourism. There are lots of cycle paths in the area and on at least two occasions we cycled the 15 or so Kilometres to Guardamar with the majority of the journey off road. Not all of these cycle routes or Caminos (Service Roads) are particularly scenic with the Spanish habit of using quiet areas as rubbish dumps.
